Training over the Christmas Period

Dalkeith Campus will be closed on the 26th December and 2nd January so there will be no training on those evenings for all groups.

Multi-Events and Susan’s Sprints: final session of 2024 will be on Thursday 19th December.

Senior Sprints will be training throughout the period (please check the Teams App for timings).

Endurance sessions on Monday 23rd and Monday 30th December will be taking place as normal.

Jumps and Throws are now finished for 2024.

Normal service for all groups resumes on Monday 6th January.

We would encourage all athletes/parents/carers to use the Teams App and sign-in to help our coaches know if you’re attending training which is particularly useful when attendance is likely to be low at this time of year. It also allows us to let you know if sessions are cancelled due to bad weather. Click on the link below and search for “Lasswade Athletics Club”

On behalf of the coaches, committee and volunteers we hope that you all have a fantastic festive break.

SAIL Indoor League – Match 2 Report

The 2nd match of the SAIL Indoor League took place on Sunday 8th December at the Emirates Stadium in Glasgow with many of the athletes competing in the first match returned to compete again.  They were joined by Jude, Orla C, Matthew, Luke, Isla, Leo, Eva and James who were all competing indoors for the first time.

*** The final match of the season takes place on Sunday, 12th January. Sign-up up here by the 29th December to be considered for this event. ***

There were lots of great performances.  Lara and Maya tackled the 60m hurdles having only started hurdling the week before and despite competing against more experienced hurdlers managed to finish 3rd and 6th in their respective age groups.

Isla and Artii completed a 60m double in the Under 11 Girls, winning both the A and B races.  Jude, on his debut, ran a great 60m race finishing 3rd overall in the B 60m race.

Finlay ran another great 600m to win his heat virtually unchallenged and recorded a new PB.

There were PBs for Ada in winning her 60m heat (3rd overall), Lara (HJ – 1.25m) and Orla (800m) in the under 13s age group with Orla taking 11 seconds off her 800m PB!

Antek took 3 seconds off his 200m PB in the U13 boys with Luke also improving on his Long Jump best.  Matthew, competing in his first indoor competition, stepped up to cover the 800m and 60m races.  It’s good to see athletes taking the opportunity to fill in spaces in the teamsheet and taking up the opportunity to try different events.

In the Under 15 Girls, Isla led from the front to win her 800m heat for a new PB.  Esme finished 6th in the shot putt throwing just slightly less than her PB which was recorded with a lighter shot putt (so technically a new PB!) and finished strongly in the 300m which she ran for the first time.

After a great run in the Under 15 Boys 800m in Match 1, Archie stepped down in distance to run an impressive 41.48s to win his heat and finish 3rd overall. He also managed to squeeze an extra centimetre on to his Long Jump PB finishing 2nd.  Harrison was delighted with his High Jump PB clearing 1.40m on his final attempt.  Leo, another of our under 15 athletes who has just made the move up from the Under 13s scored valuable team points in the 200m and 800m.

The Under 17 women’s team finished 4th overall with Aoife S scoring well in the 60m (5th) and recording a new High Jump PB of 1.50m for 2nd place.  Eva ran well in her 200m race for a new PB.  Emma, nursing a sore ankle still managed to record a 30cm PB in the Shot Putt. Beth finished 5th in the 800m running her fastest 800m time indoors.

Ruaridh dipped under 8 seconds for the first time in the Under 17 men’s 60m for his new PB and followed that with a new PB in the long jump too.  Jake S-W won his 200m heat to finish 2nd overall and Jake P finished 5th overall in the 800m also with a new PB.

Only two U20 ladies turned out this time.  Both recorded PBs – Abbie in the 60m and Eloise in the 400m.  Eloise’s 60.9 seconds was enough for the win and will almost certainly dip under 60 seconds this season.

The Under 20 men’s team put in some solid performances to finish 4th overall.  Alec again mopped up the points with 2nd place in the high jump and PBs in the 60m hurdles and shot putt.  His shot putt was an improvement of over one and a half metres which in throwing terms was massive!  In the 200m, James also ran a new PB. Ramsay had a good start in his 60m race finished 5th just outside his PB. Will ran in the 400m and finished 5th.

Thanks again to our officials – John McOmish, Susan Outerson and Alison Binns and also to Gary Leek at Athletics Digital for the photos.

Run, Jump, Throw

BOOK NOW | Calling all future track and field stars! Get ready to Run, Jump & Throw in this introduction to athletics at Danderhall Community Hub on 6 January 2025.

Book by calling any leisure centre or go online (search for run, jump, throw in courses): https://ow.ly/Tlc050UeHvZ

We’ve been working with Midlothian Council to get Run, Jump, Throw back in Midlothian for Primary School aged kids. Initially launching in Danderhall, we hope that this will be rolled out to other parts of Midlothian in the future. There will be a clear pathway established for the kids to progress to Lasswade AC at a suitable stage of their development and when we have the space.

The Midlothian Council Sports Development team will be mentored by coaches at Lasswade AC and we hope to see them getting involved with the sessions at the club too.

Spaces are limited and are already filling up, especially in the P4 to P7 age group.

SAIL Indoor League 24/25 Match 1 Report

Sunday 27th October, 2024

Sunday 27th October saw the return of the Scottish Athletics Indoor League at the Emirates Stadium,  Glasgow.  There was no league action last season due to the refurbishment work ahead of the World Indoor Championships that took place in March earlier this year.  Team Lasswade also saw a bit of an “upgrade” since the last time fixture with 36 athletes turning out to compete – twice the size for the last competition in January 2023 – a great effort from our coaches getting athletes to represent the club.

Non stop action!

Competing for Lasswade for the very first time was Albie, Elkie, Sienna, Maya and Jake.  Hopefully, all our athletes competing indoors for the first time enjoyed the experience of running in such a great venue – there was an audible gasp from one of our athletes as we walked into the arena as it really is one of the best indoor tracks in the country.

Despite a few nervous faces, Lasswade’s athletes acquitted themselves well with a good number of athletes winning their heats.  The Under 11 girls and Under 20 men’s teams put in solid performances and finished top of their age groups.

Thanks to the parents who assisted on the day.  With a team of 36, it really does need more than one team manager to help shepherd athletes to their events and calm some nerves (and not just the spectating parents!).  Please do volunteer your help if possible.

The next competition is on the 8th December.  Sign up here by 25th November.

Training in Winter

We’ve been quite lucky with the mild weather recently,  but as the nights are getting colder, it’s important that athletes are dressed appropriately for training. Athletes who are not suitably clothed for training  may be asked to sit out the session. We are hoping that this would be a last resort but athletes should bring extra kit to cover all weather conditions.

An important thing to remember is that the temperature can drop quite quickly at Dalkeith, so whilst the weather at the start of the session maybe “OK”, by the end of the session, the temperatures can easily drop below zero. Children also lose heat much faster than adults so they can develop hypothermia much quicker.

Please look at the chart below for recommendations on what to wear.

National Short Course Cross Country Champs – Kirkcaldy, 2 November

The National Short Course Cross Country Championships took place yesterday at Kirkcaldy High School. It was a mild and dry day, the course was good underfoot with the exception of a section in the far corner that was quite muddy.

There were 17 athletes from Lasswade competing with 4 medals and lots of strong performances in large and high quality fields.

The first race of the day was the under 15 girls and Freya Brown continued her strong form with a comfortable win in the u15 girls race over 2k. Cerys Wright followed her home in 2nd place. There was good support from Beth McWilliam in 28th and Emma Thomson in 35th. The team won silver medals, just 3 points behind 1st.

Next off was the u15 boys, with two athletes from Lasswade Josh Cooper and Finlay Troup, who both had strong runs to finish in 47th and 54th respectively.

Bethan Kitchin was our sole runner in the u17 women which was the next race to the start line and she finished fast in 29th place.

The races were coming fast and the u17 men were next and it produced a great team performance with Charlie Copp 24th, Laurence Ward 32nd, Jake Page 41st and Elliot Cameron 61st.

Olivia Meikle placed really highly in the senior women’s race over 4k – coming 66th and 17th u20. Kate Kitchin backed her up in 226th and 36th v40.

The final race and biggest field of the day were the senior/ junior men. Andrew McWilliam led the field to the first corner and was rewarded with a fine 20th overall and bronze in the u20 category. Behind him came Rowan Taylor in 9th u20 and Innes Wright a few seconds back in 13th. The men’s team was completed by veteran Andy Brown who was 12th in his age category with team finishing 12th.

Well done to club member Harry Henriksen finishing 9th overall representing Edinburgh University.

It was also great to see Christian Graham at the event spectating, hopefully we’ll see more of him at training over the coming weeks and months as his recovery progresses.

Overall another great day out for Lasswade cross country team.

East District League – Kirkcaldy 26/10

The first East District League match of this season took place at Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy on Saturday. We were very fortunate with the weather as it was dry, mild and sunny.

It was great to see so many Lasswade AC athletes competing, we had a total of 32 athletes over all the age groups, with some great performances and a number of our teams are sitting near the top of the league table after the first match.

Thanks to everyone that came along and supported the club in the league. Congratulations to all the athletes on their performances.

Volunteers Needed

Lasswade 10 Roadrace, Sunday 2nd March 2025

It’s that time of year when we start planning for the Lasswade 10, our annual road race that will take place on Sunday 2nd March, 2025. We’re looking for some more volunteers to join the organising team this year to help spread the load. Please get in touch (chair@lasswade-ac.org.uk) if you can help.

The race helps raise funds for the club and enables us to put on events like the club track competition and enter the different cross country and track and field leagues.
