Congratulations to all the athletes taking part on the day. For some it was their first, and last, chance to compete at Meadowbank.  Also a massive thanks to all the officials, helpers and everyone who contributed to the food stall and tombola.

ITV Borders video

Attached is a copy of the video that was featured last night on ITV Borders News and follows on from the recent video piece on Adam Leighton.

It shows the club in good light. It also is edited really well and capturing “a night at the campus” as throws, endurance are there in the background.

Feel free to share with young potential athletes who have been considering coming along.

UPDATE Help STILL needed ******* CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 10 SEPTEMBER 2017***

********Club Champs**********

Still some adult helpers needed on 10 September 2017 to assist on the catering, tombola, raffle stalls

Names to leighmiller24@hotmail.co.uk as a matter of some urgency.

Also the need for baking/rolls, tombola and raffle prizes to be brought on the day.

Please let Leigh know what you can do to help out in advance and on the day.

Hi

Our Club Championships are nearly upon us and, as with every year, I make a plea for helpers on the day and donations for tombola, raffle and food such as filled rolls, tray bakes, cakes etc. All monies made go directly to the club. Tea and coffees will also be on sale.

The difference this year is that I will not be at the championships (a wedding in sunnier climes) and therefore the club requires someone who can take the lead on pulling a group together and making sure that duties are covered. To be honest it always works well on the day as people are happy to help out and no one should miss their child competing.

Please see me in the first instance as I will collect names. Donations for tombola, food etc should not be given to me but brought on the day.

I would also like to ask at this point that we will require parent helpers to officiate on the day (it is good fun), please contact Dave McConnell if you are interested.

Your club needs YOU!!

Many thanks

Weekend Action

Among a large contingent of Scots competing for Team GB at this years World Championships, in London, was Lasswade AC athlete Guy Learmonth. Having finished seImage may contain: 1 person, outdoorcond in the 800m, at the British Championships earlier in the year, Guy secured his place on the team by running a new PB at the Anniversary Games at Olympic Park last month.

In Saturdays round of heats Guy ran brilliantly to finish in third and make his way through to the semi- finals. His time of 1.45.90 just a fraction off his current PB. Another good run in Sundays semi- final was not quite enough to make it through to the final, finishing in 5th. It was another fine performance from one of Scotlands top runners though, and continues this years fine run of form.

Representing their Country in another International tournament were four of Lasswade AC’s rising stars. Lauren Dickson, Sarah Tait, Magnus Tait and Bryony Patterson were in Dublin last weekend, having been selected to represent Scotland in the Celtic Games. Morton Stadium was the venue for the teams from Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

All four athletes contributed to a fine performance by the Scottish Team. Lauren Dickson brought home a Silver medal finishing second in the U18 Girls 1500m. Bryony Patterson added another Silver in the triple jump. Her final jump of 10.86m enough to move her into second spot. Sarah Tait added another medal and more points to the Scottish Teams total, finishing 3rd in the U18 girls 1500m Steeplechase, to take Bronze. A new personal best of 6.23.18s in the U18 boys 200m Steeplechase left Magnus Tait just outside the medals, but added valuable points to the teams total.

On the day Scotland finished in overall second place on 159 points, ahead of Wales on 146 and behind winners Ireland who finished on 188pts.

A large group of Lasswade ACs younger athletes were in action closer to home, having been selected to compete in the Forth Valley League Select match. The Select match represents athletes who have put in the best performances, across all the divisions, giving them the chance to compete against each other for medals. A rain soaked Grangemouth Stadium was the venue for the match.

Leading the way for the U11s was Shane Majekodunmi in the sprints. It was a golden day for Shane, firstly winning the boys 100m in a time of 14.7s. Shane followed this up with another gold in the 200m, finishing in a new PB time of 30.00s. A third Gold was on its way at the end of the day as Shane helped his relay team to top spot. Among the other U11s selected Eloise Scott ran well in the 100m, and helped her relay team to second spot. Harry Miller also equalled his PB in the HIgh Jump, finishing in 5th place on the day. Competing in the U11s 600m Aiden Haggerty was running well, but unfortunately pulled up injured.

There were no medals for the U13 athletes, however there were some strong performances. Alec Miller was just short of his PB in the High Jump with a clearance of 1.30. This left him in 4th place overall, just missing out on a medal through countback. Alastair Scott threw a new PB of 6.10m to finish in 6th place in the Shot Putt. Amy McLaughlin‘s throw of 12.73m in the discus, a new PB, left her in 4th place and just 10cm off the medals.

Adam Leighton continued his fantastic season in the jumps, dominating both his events to come home with two Gold medals and a new PB in the High Jump. In tricky conditions Adams Jump of 5.33m in the Long Jump was enough to get him his first Gold of the day. A new PB jump of 1.75m easily won him his second in the High Jump.

Another double medal winner for Lasswade was sprinter Mia Downie. First up for Mia was the U15 Girls 100m. Mia finished in a time of 13.3s to take second spot and the Silver Medal. Later in the day Mia ran another strong race in the 200m, taking the Bronze medal with a time of 28.1s. Just behind Mia in that race was fellow Lasswade sprinter Abbie Malinowski, finishing 4th in a time of 28.4s.

There were more medals for Lasswade athletes in the U15 Field Events. Cameron Dickson threw 22.18m in a rain affected javelin competition, to take a well earned Silver medal. His throw of 13.25m in the Discus  left him in 6th place in that event. Heather Kinghorns throw of 8.17m in the Shot Putt left her just outside the medals in 4th place, but was a new Personal Best. Heather went one better in the discus throwing 17.79m to take the Bronze.

FVL Match 2, Sat 20th May, Meadowbank Stadium

Forth Valley League, Match 2, Saturday 20th May

It was  a tough day for Lasswade ACs young athletes, on Saturday, as they went into competition in the second of this seasons Forth Valley League Division One matches. The rain had been coming down long before athletes arrived at Meadowbank Stadium, and continued throughout the course of the afternoons match. Despite the conditions athletes from Lasswade, and the other 7 teams in competition, got on with things and managed to produce a high standard of competition.

First up on the rain soaked track was the Girls Under 15 200m races. In a great start to the day for Lasswade, Mia Downie ran superbly to take first place. Her time of 26.69 was a new personal best, and also moved her into the top ten rankings, in Scotland, for the year. Following up was Abbie Malinowski. In the tightest race of the day Abbie was beaten into second, by photo finish, by Dunfermline athlete Erin Thomson. Both athletes recording times of 27.52. After being out for a while Abbie is now getting back to somewhere near her best, and Saturdays time moves her into the toptwenty rankings for the year.

Elsewhere in the 200m there was a raft of new personal bests for Lasswade athletes. In the Under 15 boys both Adam Leighton and Aonghus Spence managed to beat their previous bests. The Under 13 runners of Skye Foster, Phoebe Kong, Alastair Scott and Max Sharman also managed new best times. Not to be outdone, Abbie Foster and Ramsay Blair also managed new bests in the Under 11 competition.

The highlight of the distance events was Hannah Harley’s run in the Under 11s 600m event. Taking it out fast from the start Hannah built up a lead over the rest of the field, which she never looked in danger of surrendering. Coming home, in a new personal best time of 1.57.15, Hannah finished well ahead of second placed runner Eilidh Ovenstone from Corstorphine.

While conditions underfoot were difficult on the track, the field events arguably had it worse. In the High Jump Lasswade Athletes Adam Leighton and Michelle Blaikie both took top spot in the Under 15s. Adam winning with a jump of 1.60m and Michelle with a jump of 1.50m. Excellent performances considering the conditions.

Also out in the track, despite a treacherous run up, Alec Miller produced a big new personal best in the javelin with a throw of 15.13m. Not far behind, in his first competition, was fellow Under 13 athlete Jan Rochon, with a throw of 13.50m. As the day wore on conditions were starting to affect most of the events. Run up areas and the track were becoming more dangerous and at one point a snow shovel was brought out to clear standing water from the shot putt circle.

There were a number of athletes competing for the first time as well. Not the best of days to get their first taste of competition for the club, but they all did a fantastic job.

As the relays approached it was becoming clear that conditions were getting the better of the day. With the track becoming increasingly dangerous, and concern for athlete safety, the decision was made to cancel the running of the relays.

Despite two fine team performances Lasswade find themselves in 7th place in the league, but only one point behind Central AC in 6th. With the two teams finishing in 7th and 8th getting relegated, everything now rests on a strong team performance by Lasswade in the third and final match of the season. The final match of the season takes place at Grangemouth Stadium on the 24th June.

Thanks to Mark Kinghorn, who was also stuck out in the rain, for the pictures.
