National Short Course Cross Country Championships – Renfrew – 05/11/2016

The National Short Course Cross Country Championships took place at Renfrew this year.

This was a new venue for the event having been at Bellahouston park in previous years. The weather was sunny and dry, however there was quite a strong cold wind to challenge the runners over the flat and open course.

A total of 15 athletes from Lasswade entered for this event with 12 athletes competing on the day.

In the under 15 girls we had two athletes competing. Abby McGlone who has been consistently improving was our first finisher in 47th place followed by team mate Lauren Meikle in 84th place.

The highlight of the day for us was the under 17 womens race where Lauren Dickson ran strongly over the two lap course to finish an impressive 3rd overall picking up the bronze medal. Team mates Sarah Tait And Ailsa Innes both also had impressive runs finishing 13th and 18th respectively. This meant the girls finished 3rd team and picked up the bronze team medal.  (Unfortunately Sarah is not in the picture below as she was unwell after the race).

Ailsa and Lauren with their medals!

Our under 17 men also did well with Magnus Tait our first finisher in 11th place overall, followed by team mates Christian Graham (32nd), Euan Hood (50th) to finish 7th team overall. In the same race Jamie Darling was 54th and Daniel Kelly 69th.

In the mens race we had two runners, Matthew Smith (u20) who finished 24th (77th overall) and Andrew McGlone (M45) who was 51st (218th overall).

A great event and again an opportunity for the young athletes to watch an Olympic athlete show their class as Laura Muir ran away with the women’s race. It was also good to see Freya Ross-Murray running well to finish 10th in the women’s race a few weeks after running 2.37.50 in the Chicago marathon.

National Cross Country Relay Championships – Cumbernauld 22/10/2016

The National Cross Country Relay Championships took place at Cumbernauld on Saturday 22/10. Lasswade AC fielded two young male teams and an incomplete senior men’s team.

After a strong performance by our young males in the recent East District Cross Country Relays at Livingston we believed we could be in the hunt for the medals at the Nationals.

Harry Henriksen (u13) on our first leg had another fine run finishing over 30 seconds in front of the next finisher to give Jamie Kinghorn (u15) a good lead. Jamie ran well to hold the lead as long as possible and hand over in 4th place to our final runner, Magnus Tait (u17). Magnus ran a strong final leg and was in a small pack fighting for the bronze medal eventually just missing out by a few seconds to finish 5th.

In our other team Jamie Watt (u13) in his first cross country race had a good run to hand over in 38th place to Angus Cousin (u15). Angus ran well to hand over to our final leg runner Christian Graham (u17). Christian one of our newer members ran a strong race to pull back 7 places and bring the team home in 50th place.

Eighty five complete teams finished the race and there were quite a few incomplete teams. I think this highlights how well all the boys did, a great team effort! Well done to you all!

It was a great event and fantastic for the young athletes to see two Olympians showing their class on the country with both Calum Hawkins and Andrew Butchart in the senior men’s race.

East District League Match 1 – Stirling

The first of this season’s East District Cross Country league matches took place at Stirling on 15 October 2016. It was a very wet and muddy day but Lasswade AC got off to a great start with some fine individual and team performances. We managed to field complete teams in all age groups with the exception of senior men and women where we picked up some penalty points for the incomplete teams.

Some of the highlights:

Individual:
U11 Girls – Olivia Meikle 5th
U11 Boys – Ross Wolfenden 3rd
U13 Boys – Harry Henriksen 1st
U15/17 Women – Lauren Dickson 3rd
U17 Men – Magnus Tait – 6th

Team Placings after Match 1:
U11 Girls – 3rd
U11 Boys – 2nd
U13 Girls – 12th
U13 Boys – 10th
U15/17 Women – 6th
U17 Men – 3rd

Women and Men both in 23rd place but we can improve this just by having complete teams and not picking up penalty points.

Well done to everyone who competed for the club yesterday and thanks for turning out on such a wet day!

The closure is planned for the 28th and 31st October 2016 and from the 1st to the 4th November 2016 between the hours of 08:00 and 16:00 each day. It is however hoped that the works will be completed by the 2nd November 2016.

National XC Relays, 22 October 2016, Cumbernauld

Kirk Smith is urgently looking for anyone wishing to run in the event at Cumbernauld to confirm with him ASAP as names need to be submitted before the weekend is out.
In particular we need more U13 girls. We have only have one at the moment which obviously means only one team which is disappointing as we have more older girls wanting to race.

Boys we  could do with one more U15 or one more U13 and we could run them as an U15 that would give us four boys teams.

Please consider helping your clubmates and get your name to Kirk as soon as possible

Many thanks

Brian

Young Athletes Basic Guide to Nutrition and Hydration

food-and-drink

As the cross Country season gets underway this weekend we look to get our athletes prepared in the best way possible.

Part of this preparation is being properly hydrated and eating healthily before , during and after activity.

There are vast amounts of articles to confuse even the most avid reader on the subject but with thanks and permission of my good friends at Moorfoot Runners I reproduce and attach what I believe is a very user  friendly document
