National Age Championships. 14 & 15 February 2015

Not a huge number of Lasswade athletes competing last weekend at the Emirates however those that were there did themselves and the club proud. None more so than Adam Leighton who got the Gold in the U13 Boys High Jump on Saturday equalling his PB in the process. Adam was also 4th in the Long Jump

East District Cross Country League Match 3 – 17 January 2015

The final of this seasons East District Cross Country League matches took place on Saturday at Broxburn. Numbers taking part for the club were better than the previous match in Alloa but it was still disappointing to have quite a few incomplete teams.

There had been some snow on Friday and there were a couple of inches in Livingston with conditions worse the further west you got. There was still an amber weather warning in place for this area of Scotland but although cold and with a dusting of snow conditions were much better than expected at Broxburn.

The first race of the day was the under 11 girls but unfortunately we had no runners in this race. Next it was the turn of the under 11 boys and we had four runners in this race. Lasswade athlete Harry Henriksen was a clear winner maintaining his unbeaten record over the cross country this winter. Next home with another good performance was Cameron Dickson in 24th place followed by Alec Miller and Alastair Scott finishing 44th and 57th respectively. Both boys were running in their first cross country race for the club.

In the under 13 girls Hannah Little led the team home with a good run finishing in 14th place. Ellie Baxter was our next counter in 41st place followed closely by team mate Kaerdy McDonald running her first cross country for the club and finishing in 43rd place. Mia Downie also running in her first cross country for the club finished in 52nd.

Next it was the under 13 boys with Kurt Robertson our only runner. Kurt ran well and had a good run to finish in 26th position. In the under 17 men we again only had one runner Kyle McKenzie who ran a solid race to finish in 21st place. The ladies were the next race and it was another solo performance with Cathy Dickson the only Lasswade runner. Cathy ran very well to finish in 60th place (17th vet).

The next race was the under 15 boys with Jamie Darling, Thomas Snodgrass and Daniel Kelly making up the team.  Jamie led the boys home in 20th place with Thomas next in 30th and Daniel after almost missing the start working his way through the field to finish in 36th place.

The penultimate race of the day was the under 15/17 girls race and we had a full compliment of runners. Lauren Dickson who has been running consistently well this season produced another fine run to finish 2nd behind Kate Gallagher of Central. Next home for Lasswade was Sarah Tait who again has ran consistently well and finished strongly in 6th place (after going for a dip half way round).  Keanna McInnes had a good run and was our third counter in 24th place followed by Lauren Wilkie who had worked her way through the field to finish 29th. Caroline McKinlay who was running with a sore knee should have pulled out but kept it going and finished in 33rd with Eilidh Brown close behind in 36th place.

The final race of the day was the senior men and we had a full team for this race as well! Martin Gore had a strong run to finish in 42nd, he was followed by Colin Menzies in his first cross country for …… a long time with a good run in 61st.  Ben Mitchell had a strong run in in 82nd (17th vet) with team mate Scott Dickson also running well to finish 120th (40th vet) and Doug McDonald not too far back in 142nd. Brian Wilson completed the team in 205th (101st vet).

Finally congratulations to our under 15 girls who finished 2nd in the league this season. The girls have turned up for every race and have ran consistently well over the three league matches so fully deserve their second place. Well done also to the under 15 boys who finished 6th in the league.

Thanks to all parents and athletes for their support this season.

The next race is the National Cross Country on Sunday February 23rd.  I will be in touch shortly regarding this event.

Ross Matheson’s New Mexico Training Blog (14/01/2015)

Due to a hectic semester and a busy season of racing, I fell behind on the monthly training updates. I will do my best to keep the club updated with training/racing in America!

I am flying back to New Mexico for what could be my last semester in the NCAA. The winter break did not go to plan, after picking up a cold then a chest infection resulting in my training suffering. We tend not to do much speed work in New Mexico given the extra time needed to recover from hard sessions at altitude. Therefor I was looking forward to getting some speed work at sea level over Christmas to get me set for the indoors season. I had planned on running the indoor 3k on the 3rd and the Portobello Promathon on New Years Day. Unfortunately I had to withdraw from both but managed to get a race at Holyrood in the International Relay at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country. I ran the 2x1km relay with Laura Muir and managed to get 3rd, a good result against a strong field.

Once I get back to New Mexico I will ease into training for a few days to allow the last of the chest infection to clear up. Also since I stayed an extra week at home to run Holyrood I will be straight back into classes. My first indoor race is on the 31st of January and I hope the lack of track work won’t have had too much of an affect on my performance. After that I have 2 more races within a month to conclude a short indoor season, giving me 5-6 weeks to prepare for outdoors.

I will have to make a decision soon as to whether I want to stay an extra year in America. I have an extra year of eligibility due to not running for my University in Scotland, however I am excited at the chance to come home and begin my career in Edinburgh. If indoors and outdoors go well, I may be inclined to stay, however the recent success in Scottish Distance running proves that there is nothing stopping athletes succeeding in Scotland.

Great Edinburgh Cross Country & Inter District Championships – 10 January 2015

The Great Edinburgh Cross Country and Inter District Championships took place in Holyrood Park,  Edinburgh on Saturday 10 January. The weather conditions made the course at Holyrood, which is very flat and open, extremely difficult.  There had been high winds and heavy rain over the last few days and the conditions hadn’t improved. It was very cold with strong winds and some sleet/snow just to add to the challenge!

Lasswade AC have regularly had athletes selected for this event and today was no exception with six athletes having been selected and four competing.

In the under 15 girls event Lauren Dickson and Sarah Tait were selected to represent the East of Scotland.  Sarah was on a school skiing trip to Italy so was unable to compete. Lauren did compete and was in the leading group of runners from the start of the race which was over three laps. Erin Wallace (West), Eloise Walker (East) and Kate Gallagher (East) started to open a slight gap towards the end of the second lap with Lauren in fifth place just behind another runner from the West team. Lauren ran strongly on the final lap to hold fifth position and help secure the win for the East team.lauren 2015

In the under 15 boys event Magnus Tait and Jamie Darling were both selected for the East of Scotland. Magnus was also away in Italy skiing so was unable to compete. However, Jamie Darling who has made a great improvement this year over the cross country was competing. This was the first time Jamie has been selected for this event and he ran strongly over the three lap course to finish in 25th place.

Our next runner was Ross Matheson who was competing in an event being held for the first time, which was a 2 x 1km international relay. Ross was teamed up with Laura Muir who ran an impressive first leg to hand over to Ross with a slight lead.  Ross looking strong held the lead to just over the half way point when James Bowness took the lead. Ross dug in and fought all the way to the finish just being pipped for second place by Ross Murray.

The final Lasswade athlete competing was Amy Frankland who was representing Scottish Universities in the senior and U20 women’s race . Unfortunately the timing of this race seemed to coincide with the worst weather conditions with sleet snow and very cold winds battering the ladies. Amy dug in and ran well to finish in 44th place (10th U20).

It was great to see Lasswade AC so well represented once again at this event.

Congratulations to all the athletes on their fine performances.
