The Track and Field Age Group Championships took place in Grangemouth and Aberdeen in August this year.
Thanks and apologies to John McOmish who sent in these reports at the beginning of September but I’ve only got around to uploading them!
U14s
Three of the club U14 athletes took to Grangemouth for the second day of the championships.
Gregor ran in the 800m. With this age group, it’s ran as timed finals. So regardless of your race, you run as fast as you can and the top 3 times across all the heats are the medallists. Gregor was in the 3rd and fastest of the races (by SB/PB) and finished 6th in his heat and 7th overall in 2m22.92, not too far off his PB set earlier this year.
Isla ran in the 1500m. Again, it was ran as timed finals across 2 races. Isla ran in the first race, running a time of 5m57.93 her second quickest time over the distance this season.
Lara took on 3 events. First up, juggling both the 200mH and the High jump as they were on at the same time. In the High jump, which had to be run in two pools with the high entry numbers, Lara cleared a new PB of 1.43m to finish 4th. In the 200mH, Lara finished 2nd in her heat in a PB 30.94 to qualify for the final after lunch, to then run faster with a new PB and pick up a bronze medal in 30.49. Finally in the 75mH Lara won her heat in 12.59 and then ran a legal PB of 12.08 in the final, to pick up another bronze medal!
U16
It was good to see a large number of club athletes turn up on day 1 of the championships.
Archie was competing in the 300m and LJ. In the 300m, Archie qualified for the final after finishing 2nd in his heat in 39.18. The final came around and Archie ran quicker, coming through the line in 38.71 to pick up a bronze medal. In between, the long jump took place which was a high quality competition. Archie finished 2nd in a new legal PB of 6.01m with the winning athlete from Shettleston breaking the championship record with a 7.00m jump!
Fraser was running in the 1500m heats in the morning, with tough qualification to the final of only the top 6 in each heat, Fraser finished 9th in his heat running a time of 4m51.64
Ava was running in two events – the 300mH and the 800m. The 300mH saw Ava finish 3rd in her heat, qualifying automatically for the final in 51.43 not too far off her PB and followed it up by running 51.81 in the final for 8th place. Ava navigated a tricky situation with the 800m and ran in the 2nd of 4 heats with a time of 2m47.47, less than an hour after her 300mH heat.
Two Lasswade girls athletes took to the track for the 1500m, Imogen and Isla. Again with only the top 6 in each heat going through qualification was going to be a challenge. Isla ran in the 2nd heat, finishing 7th in 5m10.06 just missing on qualifying for the final. Imogen controlled the first heat coming through the line in 4m57.13 to qualify for the final in 1st place. In the final, the race was even quicker and Imogen came through the line in a new PB of 4m43.68 picking up a silver medal.
Leila was the only thrower in competition on the weekend and had a tricky day. The pressure was on after unfortunately getting 5 foul throws, but Leila pulled it out the bag in the final round to register a throw of 24.29m for 5th place.
U20
Two of the U18 athletes, Morven and Beth, chose to step up an age group and compete against the U20 athletes. Both athletes ran in the 400m, with Beth running in the first heat breaking 60seconds for the first time with a new PB of 59.86 and qualifying as one of the two non automatic qualifiers before running 60.87 in the final for 8th place. Morven ran in the second heat finishing 4th in a time of 60.32, just missing out on a place in the final. Beth also ran in the 400mH finishing 7th in the final in 1m10.67. Morven, competing in the pole vault, picked up the gold medal with a best clearance of 2.73m, keeping a clean score card the whole way.
Two athletes went in the U20 men 1500m, Innes and Andrew. A large field of 14 started the final and both Lasswade athletes were in contention throughout a tactical race. Andrew came through with a sprint to the line for bronze in 4m02.63, with Innes not too far behind with 4m03.78 for 5th place
Senior and Under 18 Championships
This year, it was the turn of the seniors and U18’s to make the trip to Aberdeen for the national championships. A good number of athletes were entered and competed well, with some stepping up an age group to compete.
U18
Once again, both Beth and Morven took to the track over the 400H. This went as a straight final and seen Morven cross the line 3rd in 1m06.70 getting the bronze and Beth just behind in 4th in a time of 1m09.89. They were both back the next day for the 200m and joined by Aoife. After the four heats, Beth qualified for the semi final finishing 3rd in her heat with a 26.51 PB, Aoife followed suit in the 3rd heat finishing 2nd in 26.54. Morven, running also in heat 2, finished 7th in 27.67. Semi finals, and Beth ran another PB, lowering to 26.47 for 4th in the first semi final, just missing out on the final by one place. Aoife qualified for the final, running 26.39 and then finishing 8th in the final in 26.59. Once again, Morven took to the runway for pole vault and kept another clean scorecard, clearing all the way up to 2.95m for a new PB and gold medal, adding to the U20 title the week before! Aoife was also in field event action in a well contested high jump, clearing 1.49m for 10th place. Emma was also in the high jump, clearing 1.39m for 13th.
Back to the track, Cerys was on for the 800m. Finishing 3rd in her heat with 2m26.99, and then followed this up a few hours later running 2m22.52 for 5th in the final.
The 1500m for women was ran as a straight final – 16 athletes toeing the start line which included 2 Lasswade athletes. Freya stormed to the gold medal with a new CBP of 4m25.81, taking a few hundredth’s off her record from last year and Imogen crossed the line in 4m55.35 for 10th place.
On the male side, Jake went in the 1500m heats, finishing 10th in 4m29.23 sadly not enough to qualify for the final. Archie stepped up an age group to compete in a large field in the long jump, leaping out to a best of 5.61m for 9th place, just missing the cut for more jumps.
Senior
Only one senior athlete entered this year for the club, Petter who resides up in Aberdeen for studies, entered both the 100 and 200m. The standard for the men’s sprints this year was high, and Petter finished his heat in the 100m in 11.71, before coming back the following day to run the 200m and finished 6th in 24.02
Well done to all the athletes and coaches who took part, and of course to all the officials and volunteers who were at the championships.
